Frequently Asked Questions

Whether you've attended church your whole life or never stepped foot in one before, we know it’s not easy visiting a church for the first time. You’re not quite sure what to expect. You probably have a lot of questions. What does a weekend service look like? How should I dress?  How long does it last? What about my kids?

Great questions! Here’s some information that should help:

WHAT TIME ARE THE SERVICES?
We have offer two different services on Sundays. Our first service is at 8:30 and is a more traditional service. Our second service is at 10:30 and has a more modern feel to it. Each service will last approximately an hour.  We’d encourage you to arrive 15 minutes early, especially if you have young children. That will give you plenty of time to get your children checked in at the prior to the service. Also, we have multiple Sunday School classes that begin at 9:30.

HOW SHOULD I DRESS?
FCOC is a "come as you are" church. We want you to feel comfortable. After all, we are thrilled that you're joining us and we want you to be more focused on who you’re worshiping than what you're wearing. In the summertime, it's not uncommon to see people wearing sandals, shorts, and a t-shirt. Most people dress casual though a few still prefer to put on their "Sunday best," and that's fine too! We think you'll fit in no matter how you dress.

WHAT ARE THE MESSAGES LIKE?
The most important thing we could say is, we aim to teach the Bible in a way that is engaging, understandable and applicable. Transformation is inseparable from application, so you will find the teaching here always ends in “how does this truth challenge, encourage or guide me right where I am?” Most messages are biblical exposition; that is, a verse-by-verse study of God’s Word, a “balanced diet” of the whole counsel of God. In addition, our focus is on God’s Word, not the teacher.

WHAT ABOUT THE MUSIC?
Music and singing is just one of the many ways that we worship. At FCOC, we are led by a team of musicians and vocalists. Our first service is generally just a vocal leader and piano. Our second service you will see a full band and vocalists. We try to stay up-to-date and current with second service, and keep the traditional feel with first service.

WHAT'S AVAILABLE FOR MY KIDS?
We have a great children’s experience every Sunday: Never too Young is designed to help your children connect with God, with each other, and with the mission. We have four areas for children (Beginnings 0-24 months, Toddlers 2-3 year olds, Pre-k 4-5 year olds, and N2Y K-5th grade).

DO YOU HAVE SOMETHING FOR STUDENTS?
We have Sunday School classes for our Jr High and High School students. We encourage them to go to our second service worship after sunday school. Also check out the Well, our youth group on Wednesday nights.

WILL I BE ASKED TO GIVE MONEY?
If you are a guest, please do not feel any obligation to give. We believe giving is an act of worship wherein those who have a personal relationship with God through Christ, give regularly and generously in response to God’s gracious gifts.

Music

We are a church that loves to worship through music. If you visit our traditional service, you will find that we are passionate about singing songs that the church has been singing for hundreds of years. If you come to the modern service, you will see that we are also passionate about what is happening today. There are some great songs being written, and we want to be a part of it.

A word from our Youth Pastor

Hey guys, my name is Lucas Lane, and I am the youth pastor here at First Church of Christ in Georgetown, IL. FCOC has programs developed for all ages of students. Here, we will keep you up to date on all events coming up in the near future. We welcome any student who comes and wishes to worship with us, or just see what we're about. It doesn't matter what your past or present situation looks like, everyone is accepted here.

The Well is our youth group on Wednesdays at 6:30. We will spend time in worship through music, studying the Bible, and just spending time hanging out in our youth room downstairs or playing games in our gym. We have programming set up for 1st - 5th grade, as well as 6th - 12th grade. Each program is developed and set up to meet the needs of those age groups. In addition, we also provide an adult Bible Study at the same time for parents of our students or any adult that desires to attend.

Lucas Lane, our youth pastor, has a blog you should check out!
